The Tracking Agent

Once installed on a computer's hard drive, the stealthy tracking device - the tracking agent - automatically contacts the Monitoring Centre on a scheduled basis, transmitting the computer's originating phone number or IP address and other auto-discovered data points such as hard-drive size, processor speed and operating system.

Ongoing communication between the tracking agent and the Monitoring Centre is silent and requires no action by the user and is maintained via an Internet or phone connection. No passwords or additional network connections are necessary so the user doesn't even know that the tracking agent is at work.

The tracking agent is stealthy - it cannot be detected through file or directory searches or through memory comparisons - and as tamper resistant as any technology of this kind can possibly be. Installed properly, the tracking agent will survive a reformat of the hard drive and F-disc of the MBR.

The Monitoring Centre

All asset data is kept in a secure central repository and can be accessed 24 hours 7 days per week by authorised administrators via self-serve reports in the Customer Centre area of www.nettrace.co.za. The Monitoring Centre archives all tracking agent transmissions, providing a current audit trail on each PC.

When the tracking agent transfers asset data, the Monitoring Centre sends the next scheduled call time and date to the tracking agent. 

Installation Options

There are several installation options available for the tracking agent software. For small numbers the tracking can be mailed to the customer or directly installed from a disc. For corporate customers, NetTrace supplies a Computrace Agent Installation Guide that enables the administrator to successfully propagate the tracking agents from a single server. Alternatively, you could make the software as part of your standard corporate image.

Data Security

It is important to observe that the information auto-discovered by our tracking agent is not only very securely archived through encrypted secure login (SSL by VeriSign), but also that no content is gathered whatsoever. Additionally, once installed the tracking agent cannot be programmed or tampered with. Any NetTrace product updates or upgrades have to go through the customer’s network administrator and can therefore be thoroughly checked out before installation.

The fact that institutions like NASA and State and Federal departments in the USA use this software is indicative of their comfort with the product and the security it affords.
