Introduction
Once a year or sometimes more frequently, organisations experience the painful process of auditing IT
equipment and assets. The value of accurate audit information cannot be under estimated as
mission critical and financial decisions are based on this audit information. Traditionally this information is collected by
a team of people, who will perform an actual physical audit of the entire
environment by walking around to each computer and recording the necessary data. Unfortunately
this human element leads to inaccuracies and inconsistencies that cannot later be reconciled.
Along with the fact that laptops temporarily away from the site and or hidden computers can often be left unrecorded.
Another disadvantage to the accuracy of information gathered through a
physical audit, is that it degrades over time, therefore if the value of this information is to be retained, the
physical audit must be repeated regularly over an extended time period.
The following options are avail able to customers
1. The Standard Audit Service: The NetTrace
Audit Service will deliver audit information for computer hardware contained on networked and non- networked PCs, monitors and printers. Using our unique Inventory Software NetTrace is able to deliver a full audit service that will act as a reference for upgrades, asset registrations and PR documentation.
2. On-going Customer Reports:
The NetTrace Customer Reports are designed to provide an executive overview of a Customer’s asset base on a scheduled basis. Depending on the requirement, organisations may receive information every six months, quarterly or once a month. The reports deliver up to date information of asset and user information and when distributed to key company personnel, effective utilisation of this valuable information is enforced. All reports are generated directly from the Inventory database, and sent in comma separated values (CSV) format. This allows for compatibility with most spreadsheet, database and reporting tools.
3. Access to the Customer Asset Information: With access to NetTrace Inventory Service and Customer Centre, IT administrators have an affordable & comprehensive tool to simplify day-to-day asset inventory management functions. NetTrace Inventory auto-discovers comprehensive asset data on remote, mobile, and desktops PCs and delivers this information in the form of asset reports via the Customer Center, a secure area of www.nettrace.co.za. Administrators can define access rights for different types of reports, and can also set alerts so they are notified when a specific event occurs (e.g., a lease is due, a new modem has been added). Alerts are received via e-mail or pager. With this functionality, IT administrators always know what PCs they have, how they’re configured, where they are and who has them. They can, for example, identify machines with outdated virus checkers, pinpoint PCs that may not be able to accept software upgrades, or are running out of necessary hard disk resources. They can control PC loss by tracking the movement of PCs as they drift inside or outside the organization. As well, IT administrators can manage their asset pool more proactively by using NetTrace Inventory as a diagnostics and preventative maintenance tool, which will reduce demands on help desk resources
Dynamically-Generated Web Reports: The reporting capability available on the Customer Center is “self-serve”, meaning that administrators are free to generate reports on the fly whenever they need information or need to make a decision about their computer inventory. Access is unlimited and administrators can get into the Customer Center at anytime, from anywhere – all they need is an Internet browser.
Conclusion
The NetTrace Audit Service is a highly cost effective and rapidly implemented Service with the unique features of no impact on users and network environment. The further benefits of an ongoing service for the management of computer assets, change management, software license compliance are features that greatly reduce the pain of future audits.
Please note: The NetTrace Audit Service is subject to analysis of the potential client’s network environment!
